When you have passed the part 2 of the test of driving ability and subsequently completed 40 hours of in-car training towards your part 3 (ability to instruct) you are given the option to apply for a trainee licence. The trainee licence lasts for a period of 6 months. This allows you the opportunity to teach pupils for reward, whilst at the same time putting into practice the knowledge you have gained during your 40 hours training, this will help you prepare for part 3 of the test. A condition of holding a trainee licence stipulates that you are required to take a further 20 hours training within the first 3 months or before your first attempt at part 3 whichever is the sooner.
